This modern sheep is believed to have crossed the Bering Land Bridge to access North America ~ 750,000 years ago (Pleistocene Period). There are two subspecies of Big Horn Sheep; The more well-known Rocky Mountain and Sierra Nevada Big Horn Sheep inhabit cooler mountainous regions of North America, while the desert-dwelling subspecies reside in the hot desert ecosystems of the southern United States and Mexico.
